How to copy a DVD movie

You will need: AnyDVD, DVD Shrink, and Roxio or Nero DVD burner applications

Download AnyDVD from www.SlySoft.com and install. You get a 21-day free trial. Not free, but...

Download DVD Shrink from www.softpedia.com/progDownload/DVD-Shrink-Download-4128.html and install. Free.

Copy the Original DVD to your Hard Drive

Insert the DVD into the drive. AnyDVD will pop up a message. Click continue.
Run DVD Shrink and click Open Disc and then select Ok
DVD Shrink will scan the disc. This may take several minutes. If there is a problem reading the disc (such as a CRC error), it should show up during this procedure. If all is well, DVD Shrink is ready to do it's thing.
Click Re-author. The right-hand panel will display the contents of the DVD.
Double-click the Main Movie title that you want to copy. There may be more than one title from which to choose. Pick the largest one.
Click the Compression Settings tab.
Under the Subpicture section, deselect everything. These are the sub-titles.
Under the Audio section, deselect everything except the best English selection (usually AC3 5.1-ch English).
Under the Video section, select No Compression from the drop down (default is Automatic). This section shows the compression required to fit the selected movie and audio onto a single-layer DVD (4464MB DVD-5)
Click Backup! A warning message may pop up stating that the DVD size is too big to fit on a standard DVD-5 disc. If your DVD burning application will do compression, ignore the message and click Yes to continue. Otherwise click No to allow DVD Shrink to compress the movie.

In the Backup DVD dialog box, select a destination folder for the movie backup. You can click the Browse button to find an existing folder or create a new one. This is standard Windows stuff here.
Click the OK button to start the disc copy. A window will show the process.
When finished, exit DVD Shrink.

If the movie copied sucessfully, there should be an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS folders. The VIDEO_TS folder will contain a couple of .BUP and .IFO files as well as several .VOB files (the main movie).
You should be able to play this movie with a proper media player. VLC player will play it.

Burn the DVD Copy

Run Roxio Disc Copier or Nero or whatever to burn the movie to a DVD with compression if necessary.
Always cut the write speed in half. If the destination DVD-R is a 16x, select write speed 8x.

Notes

Store bought DVD movies are already compressed with a Codec. Most DVD movies will fit on a standard single-layer DVD-5 disc without additional compression when all the extra "goodies" (such as menus, trailers and special features) are not included in your copy.
