Do It Yourself Help

Yes, you can diagnose and repair your own computer. Here are some links to get you going.
I'll be adding more links to this page.

Do Some Testing

Verizon Internet Speed Test - Test the speed of your internet connection. Do it. It's easy and informative.

MonitorTest (free from FlatPanelsHD.com - An excellent monitor test program written in Flash by Torben Rasmussen. Download the Executable Mode version and run. Your Flash player does all the work. Move your cursor towards the top to display the drop-down menu. You will want to select the full-screen mode.

CheckeMON.exe (download from here) - A simple monitor test program (does not require installation) that displays some common test patterns and color stuff. Press ESC to exit individual tests.

Eradicate the Bugs and Crap

CCleaner Office button

Clean out the crap with Crap Cleaner (CCleaner). A must-have utility for deleting old, unwanted junk and temporary files from your computer. It also does a good job of fixing the Windows registry. Run it often for a clean, mean machine.

MalvwareBytes (free from malwarebytes.org) - This program will remove those really nasty viruses and trojan horses. I highly recommend it.

Comodo Registry Cleaner (free from cnet.com) - This is a great registry maintenance utility. Run it often.

Auslogics Disk Defrag (free from auslogics.com) - This is prettier than the Windows disk defrag utility, but you need to run both.

Anti-Virus

AVG button

Click the AVG image to download AVG Free Anti-Virus for individual personal use only. This link will download the entire file, not just a loader. Click the "Download Latest Version" on the top right side.
I think AVG Free works just fine.
This anti-virus software has grown up and contains anti-spyware and internet link protection. I personally don't like the Link Checker feature because it gets in the way. So, I don't install it.

Avast button

Click Avast image to download Avast Free Anti-Virus for individual personal use only. A great alternative to AVG. I've tested it and it works just fine also.
This anti-virus software is somewhat smaller than AVG when installed.
It does have some really cool audio when it is updated or finds a virus.

SpyBot Search and Destroy button

Spyware and Adware remover.
The free version works pretty well. The immunization feature is quite valuable. It'll suppress those crappy ads in your browser window.
