Tidbits of Advice
Here it is. My thoughts and advice in small portions. Take it or leave it.
The HOST file - How to block your computer from accessing bad sites
This is really simple. There is a text file named HOSTS in the \Windows\system32\drivers\etc directory that contains a list of URL's that you do NOT want your computer to connect to. These sites are bad news and the HOSTS file acts like a filter to keep you and your computer from getting into trouble.
The HOSTS file that I offer here for download was created by a well-known anti-spyware program and contains a lot of advertisement site addresses. If you load this file onto your system, you will notice a lot of blocked ads when browsing certain sites. Pretty neat.
Download the HOSTS file, unzip it and copy it into the above mentioned directory. The HOSTS file has no extension.
Sometimes bigger is not better. There is a really large HOSTS file offered by mvps.org that I downloaded to my system to see what would happen. Boy did it do an awesome job of blocking ads. Too awesome. It blocked every stinkin' ad in the world. I had to back it out because it blocked access to TV episodes that I wanted to watch on ABC's site.
Registry Tweeks - make Windows more better
Here is a collection of adjustments that you can make to your registry. To add the adjustment to your registry, just double-click on a .reg file and answer yes to make the change. The reg files are small, simple text files and can be edited with NotePad.
I have the following reg files available for download:Disable Autorun on All Drives - This is IMPORTANT! This will stop malware from loading onto you computer. when you insert a flash drive.
Disable Balloon Tips - If you think there are too many balloons popping up above the system tray with really stupid messages, this is for you.
Disable the Safely Remove SATA Drives - This will rid the Eject USB Devices listing of internal SATA drives. It's a rare problem. You cannot eject an internal SATA drive, so why does it show up on the list? The good news is Windows won't let you eject an internal drive anyway. So it's just an appearance thing and this registry patch will take care of it.
Disable Support for 8.3 Filename Creation - Who wants to CREATE an 8.3 filename? Okay, if you are in love with the old DOS file system, you may want to leave this alone.
Disable the Security Nag Messages - Messages like "You Don't have Automatic Updates turned On". You better have those lousy Automatic Updates turned off.
Increase the Number of Remembered Folder Settings - This is IMPORTANT! Windows will have a much better memory of windows positions and sizes with this patch.
Remove Shared Documents Folder from Computer - What the hell is the purpose of the "SDF"?
Show Mapped Drive Letters First - I think it just looks better if you are connected to a local network.
Click on the links above or you can Download the .reg Files here and add them to
your registry.
Or not.
If you're a Scaredy Cat,

and think you might screw up your computer,
back up your registry before you do any of this.
Fonts
I have no idea what the purpose is for these fonts that are installed by default in Windows. So I encourage their deletion.
Estangelo Edessa, Gautami, Latha, Mangal, MV Bovi, Raavi, Shruti and Tunga
Deletion is easy. Go to /Windows/fonts, click on the font file and delete. Done.
